P'tit Train du Haute Somme 45th Anniversary

P'tit Train du Haute Somme 45th Anniversary

Price: 17.45 / 20.07

The P'tit Train du Haute Somme celebrated 45 years of operation since the first trains ran in1971. To mark the occasion there was a special event held over four days from 5th - 8th May 2016, with six steam locomotives and two diesels operating an intensive timetable along the whole railway. 2016 also marks the hundredth anniversary of the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and as a result the gala had a World War 1 theme with re-enactments of typical trains to the front line with soldiers and munitions. Volunteers were dressed in suitable uniforms and period costumes.

The railway has constructed a replica 'Péchot' carriage for the occasion. Major Péchot of the French army oversaw the development of narrow gauge railways on lightly laid track to bring men and materials to the front line, a big advance in logistics in its day.

Our film covers all four days of the event with miniature and model railways as well as the action throughout the line from the Museum to the Plateau.

Our film looks at the History, the locomotives and the route of the P'tit Train de la Haute Somme.

The railway was first built to supply allied troops during the First World War, running along the Somme Canal. After the war it was used for the reconstruction of the devastated area. During the 1920s the Sugar Refinery at nearby Dompierre extended the line to ship sugar via barges on the Somme Canal. Today it is a tourist railway with a fine museum and an active Society organising and running trains for six months of the year. Additionally on our disc there is a museum tour hosted by David Blondin Secretary of APPEVA the organising Society.

The second disc covers events at the 2011 40th Anniversary celebrations held over four days in June. Visiting locomotives were Darjeeling Himalaya Railway locomotive No. 19, Baldwin 4-6-0 tank No. 778, Chemin de Fer du Chanteraine locomotives Tabamar and Decauville No. 1770 plus Leary an 0-4-0 vertical boiler locomotive.

Three of France's narrow gauge tourist lines each very different. The metre gauge Vivarais Railway runs for 20 miles up the steep Doux river gorge from Tournon sur Rhone south of Lyon to Lamastre.

The Abreschviller Forest Railway is a 70 cm operation in the Alsace region west of Strasburg. Both these lines use Mallet articulated compound locomotives.

The Baie de Somme Railway is a metre gauge system with two branches around the Somme estuary serving seaside towns. It has 2-6-0 tanks as the mainstay of motive power.
