Stars of Sandstone 2017 was held from the 30th March until the 9th April at the Sandstone Estate in South Africa. Two years in the planning this event saw a wide display of vintage agricultural machinery, classic cars, steam powered traction engines, military vehicles, aircraft and the famous Sandstone 2' gauge railway in action. With its large number of preserved and operational steam locomotives, Stars of Sanstone was a busy event.
Our film shows the railway in action over the full 11 days against the backdrop of working vintage vehicles and aircraft.
For the 2017 event newly restored NGG11 Garratt No. 52 was unveiled, currently the oldest working Garratt in the world. Also opened for the first time was the new Children's railway adding another 4 Km to the 26 Km of line running across Sandstone's 11,000 Hectares.

'Kalahari Sunrise' is the title of a 9 day steam event held at the Sandstone Estate in South Africa in March 2012.
There are 26.5 Km of 2' narrow gauge railway at Sandstone and the line includes steep gradients and tight curves, providing a stiff test for the wide range of steam locomotives based here. From humble 'Wren' Class 0-4-0ST locomotives to the mighty NGG16 Garratts, Sandstone provides a steam spectacular. There's a range of other steam powered machinery too, with traction engines and a Sentinel steam lorry. See eighteen different steam locomotives in action in some of South Africa's most stunning scenery.
Hear the words of owner Wilfred Mole, as he describes how the Sandstone collection came into being.
