Welsh Highland Railway Covering the history, present day and future plans for the Welsh Highland Railway, including the Porthmadog and Caerrnarfon Railways. The original WHR was built on the trackbeds of the North Wales Narrow Gauge and the Porthmadog, Beddgelert & South Snowdon Railways but lasted until only 1937. The new WHR is currently being rebuilt in 4 phases and now runs 13 miles from Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu. It uses NGG16 Beyer Garratts from South Africa on its 1:40 gradients. The Porthmadog Company operates Heritage Experience trains and plans to build northwards to meets the Caernarfon company's extension southwards.
